Alaska roofing: permits, codes and approvals
No statewide home building code (local IRC adoption plus AHFC's 2018 IRC for financed homes), Anchorage's $5,000 roof-covering permit line, state contractor registration with a roofing specialty trade, and the 120-day claim of lien deadline.
Product approvals
Alaska has no state product approval or listing system for roofing. Where a city enforces a building code, inspectors rely on the IRC's labeling rules and evaluation reports (ICC-ES, UL, etc.).
City re-roof permits
No statewide re-roof permit rule. Cities and boroughs that run building departments (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, etc.) decide; many rural areas have no local building permit.
Code rules
No statewide residential code for one- and two-family homes. The state building code (2021 IBC, 13 AAC 50, effective Oct 28, 2022) exempts detached one-, two- and three-family dwellings; cities adopt the IRC locally, and AHFC requires the 2018 IRC with Alaska amendments for homes it finances. License and insurance
Yes. Roofers must register as construction contractors with the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (AS 08.18). Roofing is a specialty trade; general contractors doing larger home work also need a residential endorsement.
Lien and contract rules
Alaska's mechanic's lien law is AS 34.35. If the owner has not recorded a notice of completion, record your claim of lien within 120 days after you finish or stop work. Contracts must carry your registration details.
