Idaho roofing: permits, codes and approvals
Idaho contractor registration (no roofing license), the 2018 IRC-based Idaho Residential Code, city re-roof permits in Boise and Nampa, and the 90-day lien and residential disclosure rules.
Product approvals
Idaho has no state roofing product approval or listing system. Local building officials rely on the Idaho Residential Code's labeling rules and on evaluation reports (ICC-ES, UL and similar) and manufacturer instructions.
City re-roof permits
There is no statewide re-roof permit rule. Cities and counties that issue building permits decide; Boise and Nampa both require a permit for a residential re-roof.
Code rules
Idaho's statewide residential code is the 2018 IRC (Parts I-III and IX) with Idaho amendments, called the Idaho Residential Code (2020 Edition). Cities and counties that issue permits must adopt it. Official adoption page ↗
Wind, fire and storm programs
No state wind, hail or FORTIFIED roof program or roof-related insurance discount law was found. The Department of Insurance warns homeowners about storm-chaser roofing practices.
License and insurance
Idaho does not license roofers. Contractors register with the Idaho Contractors Board (DOPL) under the Idaho Contractor Registration Act for any job over $2,000.
Lien and contract rules
Idaho has no preliminary notice, but residential jobs over $2,000 need a signed disclosure before the contract. Liens are filed within 90 days of finishing and must be enforced within six months.
