Ohio roofing: permits, codes and approvals

The Residential Code of Ohio's ice barrier and re-cover rules, the 3-day cancel right on home solicitation sales, and Ohio's mechanic's lien deadlines and homeowner protections on home construction contracts.

1 · Product approvals

Product approvals

Ohio has no state roofing product approval or listing system for homes. Certified local building departments rely on the Residential Code of Ohio's labeling and installation rules, manufacturer instructions and recognized evaluation reports.

2 · Permit forms

City re-roof permits

No statewide re-roof permit rule was confirmed. The Board of Building Standards certifies local building departments to enforce Ohio's codes, so check with the local department.

3 · Code rules

Code rules

The Residential Code of Ohio (Ohio Adm. Code chapter 4101:8) applies statewide, and its current rules have been effective since July 1, 2019. Roofing is in rule 4101:8-9-01, Roof assemblies. Official adoption page ↗

5 · License and insurance

License and insurance

Ohio has no state roofing license: the Construction Industry Licensing Board covers only plumbing/hydronics, electrical and HVAC/refrigeration. Check city licensing or registration where you work.

6 · Lien and contract forms

Lien and contract rules

Ohio roofers on homes face a 60-day lien deadline, strong homeowner protections under home construction contracts, and a 3-day cancel right on home solicitation sales.
